Split Rock Lighthouse
Assemble me. Let the guiding light brighten your nights!
When skies darken and the gales of November whip up 20-foot waves on Lake Superior, Kitchi-gami ("Big Sea" in the native Ojibwe language) becomes one of the most dangerous bodies of water in the world. Ships must find safe harbor or find the bottom. "The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead," as Gordon Lightfoot so memorably sang in "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald." The Mataafa storm of November 27-28, 1905 claimed the lives of 36 seamen on 29 wrecked vessels, including the schooner barge Madeira, which foundered on the rocks of Silver Bay, Minnesota. The decision was made to erect a lighthouse near the spot as a guide to future mariners. Perched on a 133-foot tall sheer cliff, the Split Rock Lighthouse, first lit on July 31, 1910, became an instant tourist attraction and remains to this day one of the most picturesque and visited lighthouses in the United States.
Ugears' Split Rock Lighthouse model is a beautiful DIY wooden reproduction of the iconic Minnesota beacon, with its octagonal tower and attached keeper's house, and joins the Lighthouse of Alexandria in the Ugears collection of world lighthouses. With its warm LED light, powered either by USB-C (via phone charging) or three AA batteries, the model also serves as a functional nightlight for your home, office, or a child's bedroom. On the side of the quaint house, near the base, you'll find the charging port and an on/off switch. Batteries are easily replaced from their tray under the model, while the LED light can also be easily replaced if needed by twisting and removing the cupola from the tower.
Crafted from art-quality 3mm composite wood, the model's dimensions are 19,8 х 24 х 11,6 cm, the perfect size for a nightstand. There are windows throughout the keeper's house and tower, while the house features a chimney and stepped entryway. Laser engraving on the exterior surfaces reproduce the look of stone and brickwork. In addition to the twist-and-remove cupola, the door of the keeper's house opens and shuts with a rubber band mechanism and windows on the keeper's house feature curtains that sway when tilted.
The Split Rock Lighthouse is a "Intermediate" DIY model with 295 parts, promising 6+ hours of engaging build time. The kit includes natural composite wood parts in laser pre-cut boards, electrical components, LED light, and a piece of sandpaper and wax for smoothing and lubricating the pieces. You won't need glue or special tools to assemble your Split Rock Lighthouse—just push the pieces out of the boards then snap them together following the illustrated step-by-step instructions in 11 languages (English, German, Ukrainian, French, Polish, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Italian, Chinese and Korean). Make sure electrical components are working properly before proceeding with the build. Once complete, you can sit back and admire your charming creation and the warm glow it gives any room, and imagine the life of a lighthouse keeper on a windswept cliff along the shores of Lake Superior.
